my favorite magazine
28 July 2008 23:34Print media is a long way from dead. That said, Bitch Magazine, a feminist response to pop culture, now has these, two of my favorite articles ever on their online site:
Written by someone who Belmonte knows IRL, a guide for seeing through articles about "science":
http://bitchmagazine.org/article/mad-science
Written by someone I have no known personal connection to, "Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Feminism But Were Afraid to Ask". For reference, please know the information presented by this article if you want to talk about women with me.

Adjectives are hard.
Date: 29 Jul 2008 15:47 (UTC)My knowledge of 20th century history sucks, so I admit that I don't know which name goes to what thing (although I did recently get a primer from a better educated friend).
It's a little intimidating, though. Of course I'm a feminist (it never occurred to me that I was anything but), but I don't know about all of the fancy ways to be a feminist. But then I got to the conclusion and "In the end, it doesn’t really matter which labels you choose or reject. What matters is your commitment to challenging the notion that a person’s gender should, by law or by rote, be an obstacle to civil and personal liberties. " That made me feel better.
Also, it was fun to read another description of girlie feminism; the 19-year old who told me about it thinks it is disgusting. Which I probably would have at 19, but now I see it as a more positive thing.
I worry about being a bad feminist since I'm a housewife whose main goal is to get pregnant. (My arches don't put up with barefoot, though.) But then I think of all of the really cool women I know whose lives I help and the fact that my elected representatives make good choices, and I think maybe I am a "good-enough" feminist. (not in the sense that things are good-enough as they are, but in that the job I am doing as a feminist is good-enough.)
