Our fridge is dead.  It died Saturday, and attempted to take us with it by trying to start an electrical fire.  Since then we have been using it as a large, doomed cooler, buying ice to keep the inside cool.  Putting the bags of ice in bowls so that the fridge would not become a lake: my idea.

Excerpted from email from our landlord:

Since I am  out of the country right now and wont  be back until about a week or so .

Could you please call a technician and shop around if possible.

Question: what do people think this means?  Are we supposed to call someone to see if it can be fixed or is truly dead?  Are we supposed to be shopping around for a new fridge or for said technician?  Does anyone KNOW a person who professionally fixes fridges or have any dead fridge knowledge they'd like to share?  It would all be appreciated.

The ice people on the corner of Beacon & Washington Street sell pellets of dry ice, that might be an easier way to chill your ice box.

I've had good luck with Dell's Appliance Service in Somerville -- 625-1311

Their flat fee for a visit isn't too bad; in my experience they never recommend repairing fridges, but this could be the exception.

So I would also start shopping for a fridge were I you. Good luck!

Dude! Dry ice is perfect for our short-term needs. And thanks for the recommendation!

I heard from one coworker who had the Sear extended service plan. The fridge broke, and after 4 different visits, they couldn't fix it. He ended up finding the manual himself, ordering the part, and fixing it. So I guess that yes, some fridges can be fixed, but it's not necessarily the case that the repair guy will be able to do it.

A fridge is something that a landlord has to replace quickly, or you can replace it yourself and deduct the money from the rent.

Given the electrical fire, I would go straight to shopping for a fridge, do not call technician. That's my thought.

The landlord would probably have been on this already as he is awesome though thrifty, but he is out of the country all week.

An update: I asked him if he meant "shop around for a new fridge" or "shop around for a non-extortionist technician" and it turns out he means the latter.
