In preparation for the reduced storage capacity of our house and as part of a we've been married long enough that the fact that we twice as much crap as we need, we are getting rid of a lot of stuff. Several of which my inner do-gooder says would probably be useful to some local humanitarian-type charity. Does anyone know of a group that needs any of these things:

-2 Sleeping bags (not ratty)
-A fuckload of band-aids
-Many sheets and towels, not new, mismatched

I know the SPCA uses old towels and sheets to line kennels and give kitties a soft place to sleep. If they're in mediocre shape, they'll probably take them.

There's also always Goodwill.

why is your house getting reduced storage capacity?

Our house will have reduced storage capacity because we are losing a bedroom (though keeping the # of occupants the same) to be our FABULOUS NEW LIVING ROOM! Our current, less fabulous living room will become a FABULOUS NEW DINING ROOM. Our current fabulous storage room will become my fabulous home-office/Jake-Abi overflow room.

Local homeless or domestic abuse shelter? They could certainly make use of the sleeping bags, and maybe the other things as well. An elementary school might want the band-aids.

Hmmm. I second the dontate to a homeless shelter idea.

Also - while I think your new icon is exceptionally flippy and cute, it does make you look like you have one extremely large triangular breast growing out of your ribcage.

I suspect the American Red Cross people that respond to disasters (things like apartment fires, etc that leave people temporarily homeless) would love some sleeping bags, but I could be wrong...

I strongly recommend donating the sleeping bags to Youth on Fire. It is an awesome center in Cambridge for homeless youth. They are always seeking donations of warm sleeping material and coats for their kids. I'm sure they'd love to have the sleeping bags, and would appreciate it way more than a place like Goodwill.

Thank you for the recommendation of a particular place to donate to! That sort of place is, in fact, the exact sort of thing I wanted to find but didn't know of locally.

You're welcome. That was what I was looking for last year when we were clearing out our linen closet. They were super-appreciative.

Also, apparently they are the only queer-friendly youth homeless place in the Boston area, which is important since homeless teenagers are disproportionately queer. I hope you do work with them. They're awesome.

Dang--as someone who works at Youth on Fire, I was going to say that we could use the sleeping bags, and maybe even some of the sheets. But now I see that it's been suggested AND that we're getting praise! Thanks a lot.

YOF definitely strives to be queer-positive, but I don't know if I'd say that we're the only one in town. I haven't heard of Bridge Over Troubled Waters being non-queer friendly, though I honestly don't know much about their day to day proactices and attitudes. Have you heard reports of them being unwelcoming to queer kids? Boston GLASS is aimed at queer kids, not at homeless kids specifically, though some of the kids who go there are homeless and many (most?) are low-income.

So, where/when could I drop stuff off?

Well, we're at 1555 Mass Ave, in the basement of the Harvard Epworth Church. We're open Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 11:30 to 6:00, and Thursdays from 1:30 to 6:00. We're not open on Tuesdays. Any time you want to drop stuff off in those hours is great--but if those times don't work, let me know.

My co-worker today was thinking that we could use some towels, as well as the sleeping bags--but not so much the sheets. Blankets are good to have for winter, though.
